I made a very exciting discovery last week. I found out that my office library had a copy of The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. What was great about the copy was that it was a paperback edition with all the five parts in it! So I do not have to go hunting for the next part once after every part. I was so completely hooked by the writing, that for most part of the weekend you could have found me in a corner of the room, with my head buried deeply in the ~ 900 pages thick volume and a huge grin on my face. The comic style of Douglas Adams is nice and easy. The rules of the universe he makes up in the book are hilarious. I was rotfling every couple of minutes. The intelligent mice, importance of the towel for a hitchhiker, the planet of Kirkit and the significance of Ashes, the knack of flying, maniacally depressed Marvin – the book is completely unputdownable. I hated having to come to work today, and I so wished that I could instead stay at home and finish off the last 2 parts of the book. If any of you haven’t read it yet, what are you doing reading my blog, go visit your library and get a copy book and read that instead :P.
Speaking of libraries, they have been the sole source of books in my life. When I was a kid, I would be fascinated by raddi shops that would have a stock of old books, fitting into my budget. But Mom, would not let me buy any books, she’d say you will read it just once anyway, why add to the clutter at home. So I would join a library, and devour all books there. Since then, I have never been able to buy books. Somehow, it has stuck in my mind that I must get my books from the library instead of buying them. Last weekend, I finally overcame this attitude and bought a copy of ‘Dork’. But the book has been sitting in the corner, since I have been totally obsessed with Hitch-Hiker’s guide. And when I look at ‘Dork’ gathering dust I still feel a bit guilty about buying it :(. What do you guys prefer library/buying ? Do you manage to re-read books you buy? Or do they just sit on your shelf?
I prefer buying š Only because I want a library of my own with a good collection someday š But whenever I go to lib, I do pick up books, and if I end up liking those books after reading them, then I go ahead and buy those.
I tried that for, bought a couple of books, but never read them again, since I had already read them once š¦
I’d like to subscribe to your library š
I prefer buying books too. When curiosity gets the better of me abt books which hv not been rated really well, I borrow them. Else, its buying most of the times. Mite also be bcoz I hv nt found a good library here as yet š
Ya I do re-read books š
I love libraries! You re-read, I find it so hard to do that, especially when there is something I’ve not read before catching my fancy š
H2G2 I keep re-reading. I prefer buying books, but borrow chick lit. That way I don’t feel guilty about spending money on a timepass book š
H2G2 is awesome š
Your strategy is good too š
I love buying books. But I am always worried if I am spending too much, so I buy stuff I am confident I will like, and borrow others š
Oh, and I do reread quite a bit! š
No-one is with me on borrowing :(. I am the odd one out!
I worry a little about spending too.. but mostly I am afraid I won’t ever touch the book again, so no buying!
I buy them and then they sit there for months.. till one day i realise ohh i dint read them… and then i go on and complete them :P:P
Yay, I have company š
oh Libraries are the best place in the world. An year of my life, was spent in the library. so much that some of the guys thought I work there. š
This book is on my todo list. Sigh. When do we get time to do what we want? The todo list keep growing and growing.
For me, for now, I would prefer getting books from library. But one day when I have my own house, there will be space for a huge library. š
I heart libraries! We need to take out time, else it just disappers š¦
All the very best for your own library š
Buying ! I like owning the book and keep it neat and clean-oh yes I also put cellophane cover on the books š and I don’t dog-ear them at all…bookmark is all I use!
Yes I re-read the liked ones…
though my buying speed is faster than my reading but it’s okay..I’ve a library of my own at home and I cherish it š
Wow Nu, you a book-collector too! I am so much in minority here š¦
While I started reading novels, I was only a student of class 2 that means only 8 years old š š
I started going to library from when I was 12 and I used to bring books from there being a member. Rarely I bought books because of expanses. And, later since I was 18, I started buying books by saving money and now I have a personal library of more than two hundred books š
though I prefer buying, most of my ‘reading’ was accomplished for the library.
nice post! liked it š
Most, sorry All of my reading has been through the library! I started early too, and my favourite summer tp was visiting my library and getting a new book every day š
Thanks!
Hitch Hiker’s guide! I bought it at Preeti’s recommendation but haven’t started reading it yet. After reading this post, I’ll start soon š And I love buying books. Somehow I don’t feel comfortable reading someone else’s copy. Due to my splurging habit on books, I’ve a sort of mini-library, though many of them are lying unread and gathering dust.
Btw, I loved the title. Seems you are specializing in play of words š
Hehe, thanks for noticing the title š
You must definitely read it (after the mid-sems, else you won’t be able to put it down long enough to study). You a mini-librarian too! If you all guys pool… we will have a HUGE mega-library š
Hitchhiker’s Guide, as Ajay kindly pointed out, is my FAVORITEST book! It’s just simply genius! Have you read the part where he proves the non-existence of God using the Babble Fish? Oh my God, pure genius! I just LOVE Douglas Adams! Every sentence has a hidden joke! Have you read the restaurant at the end of the universe? The part where the Dish of the Day introduces itself? OH! Superrrr-hilarious!
Hope you enjoyed the book too! š
I do both actually, I buy the good books and I borrow the other Timepass ones from the library! I plan to open a Library some day. So the books won’t exactly go waste! š
I can understand why it is your most favouritest book :D! it is so damn hilarious.. I totally agree he is a genius. Can’t wait till next weekend when I’ll finally have enough time to complete the book.
Lemme know when you do! I’d like to visit your library š
I used to buy books in Hyd…but now, space restriction, I am looking forward to my library visit. š
Becos of u and the other lovely friends, I got to buy some books… š Hugs…so waiting to read them. š
Shld catch up with that book- hitchhiker’s guide. š Sooon. š
You should go read that book NOW Uma š
I buy EVERYTHING, finish EVERYTHING, and store EVERYTHING, and re-read most of it š That explains the extra cartons and boxes everywhere I have stayed. I am waiting for that elusive library – that I will bring every single book I have ever owned, home. And retire in peace š
Wow, you do?
I just cannot get myself to re-read a book, hence the lirary route. All the best for your retirement plans š
š
